Our Goals are Simple

The surface option gives 50 feet of space
for parking, paths and greenery

As you can see in this photo of City Park, a few feet of green space can make a big difference in how we feel about an area.

Metro Boston is becoming more connected and livable. Part of this transition involves balancing automobiles with transit, walking, and biking.

Streets that are enjoyable to use will better support neighborhoods and businesses.

RCIC Goals for the project include:

  1. Create balanced streets
The streets should enable safe and comfortable access for all users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists and public transport users of all ages and abilities.
  2. Enhance community connections
The street should not be a barrier between communities, but should rather reconnect Charlestown, Cambridge and Somerville.
  3. Improve pedestrian and bicycle environments
There should be ample space and protection for pedestrians and bicyclists. This could be in the form of shrubs, trees, and on-street parking areas that buffer traffic and associated noise and pollution.
  4. Create flexible framework for desirable redevelopment
There way roads and blocks are laid out should be flexible enough to provide opportunity for future housing, businesses, or other uses.
  5. Create attractive public open spaces
The surface option along the entire corridor could create a 5 acre linear park for residents and visitors.
  6. Establish community gateways
The changes to the corridor should make the entrances to the Charlestown neighborhood more attractive and welcoming.
  7. Ensure public/private coordination
Residents, business owners, and public officials should all participate in making the area a great place!
